RESUMO

This study searched, within the social practice of the nursing professional, for elements that may contribute towards the advance of university graduation proposals. By using a reflexive reading process of the working universe, the research was carried out alongside two groups of nurses. The first one comprising 68 nurses graduated within the last five years and the second one comprising 11 nurses, in charge of the nursing management/coordination of different fields of professional work. In order to be accomplished, the study assumed that the nursing professionals find many obstacles at the beginning of their working life and such problems are strongly related to the initial graduation. Bearing as its goal to pinpoint the hardening elements of the nurses professional practice linked to the initial graduation, the research, configured as a case study, took advantage of a qualitative approach in its attempt to search, in the meanings of the subjects, signing elements to the improvement of the quality of the initial graduation of the nurse. The analysis of the results pointed out that the professional initiation is always a path of difficulties, doubts and uncertainties and that the research, held as a key element to the professional development face to social transformations, was a very little considered element concerning the background of the interviewed persons. In that sense, the investigation points to the necessity of an initial education that bears research as an axis to produce technical and humanistic knowledge, able to supply basic references for a critical thinking and for the tackling of the challenges prompted by a society in constant change.
