RESUMO

Introduction: Surveying expressivity in a group of undergraduate Education students is a means to reflect upon new forms of achieving a better interaction between Speech Therapy And Education, since expressivity may affect a number of communication instruments (including the voice itself) that will invariably accompany the teacher s speech, feelings and intentions. Nonetheless, a teacher s instruction period is a suitable occasion to emphasize the importance of possessing good communication skills in addition to other skills that are inherently required for the practice of teaching as a profession. In view of these facts, this study investigates in-classroom expressivity through the assessment of a focal group composed of senior Education students from a public university in Sao Paulo State, Brazil. While seeking the student s views about the importance of expressivity in their future professional practice, it is possible to position voice as an integrated resource instead of treating it as an isolated entity within the expressivity phenomenon. Objective: the purpose of this study is to assess and analyze he contents and concepts related to teaching practice expressivity that were reported by senior Education students from a public university in the countryside of Sao Paulo State. Methods: the study was based on a qualitative approach using the Focal Group as the methodological instrument. Students discussed the relations between expressivity and professional practice in the presence of the researcher and an observer, in three sessions of 90 minutes each. Discussions were recorded and transcribed according to Preti s criteria (1999). Data analysis was carried out using Minayo s dialectical propositions (2000). Results: Although the concept of expressivity was present in student s reports, its perception as a valuable resource for the teaching practice is limited. Negative aspects of expressivity were more frequently reported then positive ones. Conclusion: a closer partnership between Education and Speech Therapy is required in order to narrow the distance between the two fields and promote the acknowledgement and effective application of Speech Therapy knowledge in the professional preparation of teachers
