RESUMO

There is a shortage of research on fatherhood, compared to the extensive studies on motherhood, emphasizing, as an exception, the studies developed by psychoanalysis on the paternal role. It is in order to know how a father of a child with cancer experiences the illness and suffering in all phases therapies for which the child go, it is proposed a study on the size of the experiences of fatherhood in the context childhood cancer, comparing it with parents whose children are healthy, in an attempt to allow questions for reflection for both clinical practice and for future research in the field of childhood cancer as well as in health care public. The privileged method is qualitative in nature and comparative, since they face the possible similarities and differences found between parents of children with cancer (Group 1) and parents of healthy children (Group 2). The research is a study of cases, a systemic approach. In collects data from this survey, respondents were 30 (thirty) parents male, and 15 (fifteen) of them, parents of children and teenagers with cancer, and 15 (fifteen) parents of healthy children and teenagers. The results emphasize a society in transition with regard to the exercise of paternity, the paternal role and place of the father. Even the two groups of parents being in different situations, there are peculiar points for parents of children with cancer and common between the groups.
