RESUMO

This empirical-qualitative research aimed at identifying the learning conditions offered outside the schools environment. The hypothesis basing the study was that the family environment, involving the social-economical and cultural aspects, influences the learning process of children, possibly disfavoring the acquisition of active thinking. The main issue was to identify the reasons why students face difficulties for solid and sound learning, taking in consideration the social-economic and cultural situation of their families. This study is justified by the importance of the family background in the upbringing of the individual, since it is seen as the most strategic dimension for the development of individual autonomy and emancipation. The attention of a lower class family to the learning of a child is critical so the child learns how to confront life hardships. It is interesting for children coming from lower strata to learn well, which means, to learn reconstructive and politically, for reconstructive political learning is a key to fight political poverty. The quantitative data and subject speeches collected allowed the conclusion that learning well is a students right because it is a guarantee of collective and individual autonomy development. It was possible to notice that the economical and cultural conditions of families do interfere in the learning process whether for lack of minimal material means of survival (nutrition, clothing, footwear, housing conditions, etc.) or yet by the absence of a critical attitude towards the lack of such resources. Therefore, lower class children scholastic success shall be achieved through the confrontation with their own social-economic situation (poverty), since a special care with the learning of such children is the required mean to provide them with the ability to break up with the cycle of material and political poverty lived by their families. The familys habitus, meaning the position of confronting hardships is what shall change the condition of poverty historically constructed and sustained. Thus, the poor family shall abandon the role of a hard core of welfare policies which do not question the origin of poverty and mirror the poverty of parents as it reflects on their children.
