RESUMO

This dissertation uses as a theoretical background the Vygotskian perspective, also called the socio-cultural perspective. Pair works of students of English as a foreign language at the beginning level from a language school of a federal university were tape and video recorded. First, I pointed to several definitions of the term private speech (Flavell,1966) and its distinction from egocentric speech (Piaget, 1923). A dialogic perspective (Bakhtin,1981) of the private speech was adopted because of the inefficiency of the differentiation between private and social speech. In the first part of the analysis, I tried to show, through the cognitive processes that are present in the elaboratíon of an utterance in the foreign language, the intimate association of social and private speech in language. In the second part, I analysed the use of the mother tongue and its functions in the performance of the subjects. Based on the first part of the analysis, I concluded that a rigid distinction in the language production, of the private and social speech is not possible and that the signals of the private features in the use of language indicate the students reflection about the foreign language (epi/metalinguistic action) (Geraldi,1990) and their process of struggling with it. The second part allowed me to conclude that the native language contributes to the performance of the activíty carried oUt. Therefore, the native language helped the students speak in the foreign language. The implications of this research for the foreign language classroom are: 1) an activity, even if it is very easy for the studen ts at the beginning levei, can be difficult for them and this can create a process of reflection with respect to the foreign language. Due to such processes, the student may need more time for the performance of the activity; 2) the use of the native language should not be criticized or prohibited by the teacher because the native language can help the student speak in a foreign language
