RESUMO

A globalized world, the political and economic scenario, which is increasingly complex, with greater competition between corporations, forced them to adapt to new levels of technology, quality, and clients demands. In Scania Latin America Ltda., and in the other automakers of the Brazilian automotive industry, this urgent need to adapt to the new scenario of global competition resulted in profound changes in productive processes. The companies started using concepts based on the Toyota Production System, or, as it is better known, the lean production system, gathering innovations in the technical base, the production organization, resource management, labor, and finally, in the relations between companies and suppliers. These changes brought, among other consequences, the reduction of labor turnover, greater motivation and participation of workers in the organization and execution of tasks because they started operating in self-managing work teams, or production cells; an increase of decision-making autonomy in the productive processes, greater qualification through technical and behavioral training, creating a new worker profile, with higher instruction levels. Thus, the objective of this dissertation is to study the evolution of work teams in the Brazilian automotive industry, the necessary capabilities for the worker to perform his activities in self-managing work teams and the respective effect in their satisfaction. This work also presents the experience of Scania Latin America Ltda., which implemented a through restructuring in its production systems as of the mid-nineties, preparing all its production units for the launching, in March 1998, of a new series of products named 4 Series. This also promoted the technical and behavioral development of its workers, and the company obtained more qualified, satisfied, and consequently, more productive workers.
