RESUMO

The intense evolution of the brazilian payment system over the latest years can be both explained by technological which enabled the emerging of new electronic based payment instruments with reduced clearing lags, and by legal regulatory actions implemented by the brazilian Central Bank as an attempt to reduce market systematic risk and thus to improve the international image of the country in order to stimulate external investments. In that sense, the huge growth of the electronic based instruments became more than reality for brazilian market, both in retail and corporate segments. Credit and debit cards and also funds transfers among different banks with immediatesettlement seem to be becoming closer partners not only to consumers but especially to merchants in Brazil, who quickly get used to the practicality, agility and safety of these instruments. The good and old check, inseparable friend of the brazilian citizen in the 20th century, seems to be facing an irreversible reduction in its importance day by day. Many people have even been starting their countdown up to the total disappearance of this payment instrument. The main concern of the current is to search for a reasonable answer for this question; this search will be performed by means of capturing the trends signalized by historical data (both for check and its main competitors) and also by means of the identification and analysis of conjunctive and cultural factors that can be taken as representative in terms of check usage. Final results prove that the evolution of the brazilian system has indeed turned the check into a riskier instrument (more in a financial than in a transactional perspective), because good pyers have been strongly migrating to cards in low amount purchases and to to TED in higher ones. Anyway no signs have been shown in the sense that the check may the may disappear until the end of the next decade
