RESUMO

This text examines the socioenvironmental conflict related to the extraction of the mineral waters located in the municipality of São Lourenço (Minas Gerais, Brazil), conducted by the Nestlé corporation. The approach adopted is that of political ecology, that is capable of emphasizing the socioeconomic and environmental dimensions of the relations between humans and nature. The goal was to produce an interdisciplinary study that could generate a fuller understanding of the interplay between environmental, economic, political and cultural factors. Findings show that São Lourenços relatively stable and prosperous economy is based on the flow of tourists attracted by its apparently waning mineral waters. The continuity of this status depends on the ability of the local society to cause significant changes in the current management model applied in the extraction of mineral waters, both by Nestle and by state and federal authorities. It is expected that this text will support local citizens actions geared toward assuring their rights to an ecologically balanced environment and guaranteeing the natural endowment for future generations. It may also serve as a reference for other interdisciplinary studies focused on the complex problems created by the interactions between society and natural resources.
