RESUMO

Considering the overwhelming development of adventure tourism, a complex tourism segment which involves a wide range of modalities, practices, technologies, motivations, symbols, risks and environments, this study seeks to analyze the different meanings of adventure and risk, for adventure tourists who practice rafting in the municipal districts of Apiúna (SC) and Brotas (SP). The research was carried out for a Masters degree dissertation as part of the Postgraduate program in Tourism and Hotel Management, and is characterized as an exploratory study. The methodological tools used for the data collection were structured observation and semi-structured interviews with the tourists. The focus was individuals who practice rafting in the Itajaí-Açú (Apiúna - SC) and Jacaré-Pepira (Brotas SP) rivers, and their meanings and attitudes, based on the idea that an understanding of the adventure tourism segment considers the relation between the tourist, risk and adventure. The methodological strategy is oriented towards the historical, cultural and linguistic perspectives, and is based on the ideas of Athony Giddens (1991; 1997; 2002; 2005), Ellen Meiksins Wood (1999), David Harvey (2002), Henri Lefebvre (1991), Karl Marx (1996; 1998), Mike Featherstone (1996; 1997), Nicolau Sevcenko (2003), Zygmunt Bauman (1999) and Ulrich Beck (2006) for the contextualization of the social processes that configure contemporary society and their expression in the relationship between adventure and risk. It also uses the approaches of Mikhail Bakhtin (1995) and Mary Jane P. Spink (1999) for the understanding of the language and the production of meanings in daily life. It takes the dialectic concept as an orientation for theoretical-conceptual reflection, through the juxtaposition of different ideas which are presented in the studies on adventure tourism, given the inherent complexity of this phenomenon. The analysis of the data emerged from the dialectic thought, based on the emphasis of the assumptions which signal contradiction, unity and mutation, movement and history. The aprehension of these aspects enabled an understanding of the meanings of adventure and risk, attributed by the tourists, as arising from the development of the existence of the individual, sometimes permeated by values of acceleration, competitiveness, rationalization, hedonism and consumerism of contemporary society, and sometimes by stimuli which are outside the imperatives of this social reality, such as creativity, socialization and awareness. This duality therefore revealed an interlinking between the form in which meaning is attributed to the adventure, and the risk involved in the activity of rafting, with the contradiction of mans existing and resisting in the world in which he lives
