RESUMO

Recognizing the importance of studies in Critical Discourse Analysis to the understanding of semantic processes and in the belief that changes in discourse may bring about social changes, the present research aims at exploring the discursive construction of a moral subject in the Ethics component of Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais, a public policy document within the area of the educational system in Brazil. To this end, the analytical category of intertextuality has been adopted, with a view to capturing the different voices which are brought to the debate about Ethics, and the way in which these voices are represented in the document. Within the category of intertextuality, reported speech (INDURSKY, 1997) and modality (HALLIDAY, 1985) have been singled out as relevant parameters for the study of the different voices in the text and to capture the way in which the subject of discourse is represented in it. An extra component of this analysis consists in the identification of certain linguistic markers, typical of the language used at school in a different order of discourse (MOIRAND, 1991 apud SANTANNA, 2004). These markers function as a strategy for the construction of a particular kind of image for the discourse participants. It is claimed, in this research, that the textual voice in the PCN imaginarily represents his interlocutors as professionals in need of simplified explanations about Ethics, conceiving them as professionals who should improve their performance. It is also claimed that the PCN is colonized by a Habermasian ethics of discourse which is presented as if it were the only possible view about Ethics, and therefore necessary to be used at school. Besides, it is also claimed that the PCN is colonized by an ethics of difference, characterized by claiming respect for minority groups. This way, in the Ethics component of the PCN different discourses are activated and recontextualized, creating new meanings and new possibilities for social change.
