RESUMO

For most readers of newspapers and news magazines editorials and opinion articles are the most âadequate sitesâ for the expression of ideological positions. News reports are considered by most to be an objective and impartial informing of the facts. This implies that most readers believe that they interpret the news and arrive at their own conclusions without undue influence from those who write the news. The objective of this study is to analyze the effects of the discursive practice of constructing social identities in news reports. In this specific case we examine the identity construction of victims and crimina ls in news reports of crimes resulting in death. Through an investigation of linguistic and discursive categories used by news writers, we show that the construction of social identities is a discursive process, which has a political and ideological basis. Our theoretical and methodological approach to the study is informed by Critical Discourse Analysis, especially the analytical framework developed by Fairclough (2001) which deals with discourse as textual production, discursive practice and social practice. By examining how social reality is linguistically represented in crime news, particularly the representation of social identities of victims and criminals, we suggest that there is a discrepancy between social reality and the textual representatio n of this reality, which works ideologically. A critical analysis of media discourse allows us to be aware of how language is used to manipulate and control public opinion and how we might change such practices
