RESUMO

The main purpose of this work has been to study lhe dance as a process of communication based in lhe hypothesis that it collaborates for lhe dissolution of lhe differently able body stigma. In arder to better understand lhe differently able body concepts and lhe stigma we have searched for theoretical subsidies in Greece, rescuing two models that have emerged from lhe field of disability studies that serve as organizational principies. The medical model describes modern assumptions about people with physical impairments in lhe developed world; lhe communitv model offers an alternative perspective that can be applied to our investigation of physical impairment in ancient, or any, society. The understanding of lhe shared evolution relations between an organism and its environment was used in lhe presentation of lhe experience where participated 18 persons with varied diagnosis (physical and/or mental disabled and Down 3yndrome) and one able body teenager during lhe period between June 15, 1998 and Dec, 5, 2002. There were 9 females and 9 males between 10 and 40 years old. The movement achievement was able to change and fortify lhe communication process breaking off, inclusive, with lhe dance as an activity exclusively artistic and only destined to those with "able body". Given that disability signffies lhe cultural antithesis of lhe fit, healthy body, what happens when visibly disable people move in to lhe role of dancer, lhe very same role that has been historically reserved for lhe glorification of an ideal body? The integration of disabled bodies into contemporary dance result in a disruption of creation of a world where there is a supposition that everybody is able (able body)? Our personal experiences with dance and deficiency made us to be aware of lhe extension in which lhe identity of a person is read through lhe body and algo lhe conscious of how our cultural definition for deficiency is really as simplistic as physical impairment. With lhe conquest of lhe movement it starts lhe stigma dissolution. The able body student arrival in lhe group confirms lhe fact that lhe dance, when treated as a process of communication, because it understands each of those bodies as media, collaborates, in fact, for lhe stigma dissolution. 30 it is a powerfuI instrument of introduction of lhe differently able body in society
