RESUMO

A great amount of research has been done about executives functions since 1938 and since then the functions of the executives were duly demystified, but, despite that, the organizational world, specially transmitted in business magazines, insist on attributing a aura full of glamour to the work of those professionals. During the 80 s there was a few research on this subject, but the corporate scandals and the radical changes on the many companies on the 90 s, enlighten this elite again. Aiming at verifying how this professional works, it was carried out a research with 10 high executives from different companies in the city of São Paulo. In order to present the results of the research, this report was organized as it follows: on the first part it is conducted a review of the main studies on the executives functions, on the second part, departing of participant observation it is presented the field work: the follow-up and registration of the activities carried out by these executives during a typical working day and the answers obtained in a semi structured interview about the aspects of the use of time, of the functions and of the familiar life. On the third part, the data obtained are discussed: even if these people s life is focused on work, it is not possible to say that they are on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Since they are at the top of their career, their work consists on charging results from the employees, who are under their direction and in building relationship nets, which make it easier and help to consolidate their position. It was also possible to observe that the executives of Brazilian companies have a greater autonomy in setting forth policies and taking decisions in relation to the executives of multinational companies. Although the clichés of globalisation world, the results of this research allowed us to say that there is no difference between the functions of executives comparing with the results of research done more than fifty years ago.
