RESUMO

This study is the result of a research carried out through out the year of 2008, with a class of students from the 5th year of the Brazilian school system (equivalent to the Junior groups of primary school in the British school system) from a state school in the Federal District of Brazil. It had as its objective to understand students perception on assessment. It was a case study and data was collected through class observation, analysis of documents and interviews with students, the most important interlocutors. Bertagna, Freitas, Perrenoud and Villas Boas among others gave the theoretical support for this study. It was possible to reflect upon the assessment system and to realize that it acts as a support to reproduce in schools the same capitalist relations existing in a society. The study also points out formative assessment as a way to enable students to reach intelectual autonomy and suggests a pedagogic practice based on participation and development of citizenship. The results showed the existence of an assessment system which had as its only function to pass or to fail students. Therefore, from the very beginning, the greatest worry of students was to pass. They were not worried about learning but only about marks as these marks would eventualy decide if they were going to pass or not. As marks were decided by tests they were constantly worried about tests. Other aspect which was highly valued was behaviour. So, from the students point of view in the group which was observed three aspects were highly valued in their assessment: mark, test and behavior. Students expressed the uncomfortable feeling they had that assessment was used as an instrument of control and not as part of the learning process. Students felt also pressure for good results from parents on them. Gender was another issue that interfered with class dynamic. The students who were interlocutors of this study, at the age of ten, already had the perception of the assessment system of the school as autoritarian, as a way of controlling and submitting them to school rules. Learning was in the second place. We might have future teachers among these students and these future teachers will probably reproduce the same ideas of assessment they experienced as pupils. Considering the fact that the process of internalizing these practices begins very early in life it helps to explain why they are so difficult to change later in life. Teachers were assessed in the same way when they were pupils as well as their students, parents were and that is why parents expect the same from schools. It is a whole system of values and beliefs that has to be changed.
