RESUMO
This dissertation aims at studying the theme of the social role in the composition of the characters, and mainly, the composition of the narrators in Machado de Assis s fictional prose, considering as the principal object of this study his very last novel: Memorial de Aires. Taking the tale "O espelho" as the starting point -in which we have the character Jacobina theorising about the existence of two different souls (the internal one and the external one) and understanding the external souls as the social nature of the individual - we go through the analysis of Memorial de Aires, observing the process of incorporation Conselheiro Aires makes of his social role as a diplomat, creating a diplomatic narrative style which brings consequences in the configuration of the rest of the characters in this literary work, characters who also require further investigation, once they take part in the narrative according their role demands from them
