RESUMO

Antônio Vicente Mendes Maciel, before settling in Bahia, as oral tradition has it, had a promise to keep; to build twenty-five churches in lands far from his own Ceará. The information about Antônio Conselheiro that became history consists of the last four years as founding leader of the Belo Monte community and provoker of the fratricide conflict that exterminated the entire Belo Monte nation: the Canudos War. However, little is known and was revealed about the devotees previous life during the period that goes from 1874 until the foundation of the canudian village, the moment in which he most operated as a builder and restorer of pious works. Also, almost nothing was said of his followers, his cultural productions such as: religious creeds and devotions, feasts, arts, architecture, and more. About Antônio Vicente Mendes Maciel as a construction worker and restorer, in the arid regions of Bahia, practically nothing has been researched, which has contributed to oblivion and annihilation of formidable copies of his works. So, this current work, through field research, aimed, through oral sources and consulting documents such as: letters, newspapers, photographs, as well as the works of chroniclers, journalists, poets, etc., to reconstruct and bring back to memory from nineteenth century images, already destroyed copies, as well as revealling the works of religious architecture presided by Antônio Conselheiro and his people which are still intact, but immersed in oblivion. On the other hand, we sought, too, to reveal some constructions which earned more visibility from this research, because, before this, they were not even said to have belonged to the Company Conselheiros people). The work of art, material and immaterial consolidated by the devotee Antonio Conselheiro and his retinue consists of a great historical source of teh extremely tense episode which ocurred in the backwoods of Bahia, and of extremely rich material for the most varied dialogues with the past. Accordingly, to expose Antônio Conselheiro, popular architect, decorator, restorer, city founder, as a subject of his time, of the wishes of his time, of the aspirations of his generation and religious sentiments, makes us see, also, his supporters, not as gansters and fanatics, but as construction agents of social and aesthetic values, as well as producers of stories and memories.
