RESUMO

Introduction - Lymphedema and decrease on the amplitude of the movements in homolateral limb is the most frequent complications of breast cancer treatment. The results obtained with traditional therapies were not enable. Objective - To evaluate the results of the acupuncture as therapeutic technique used on the motor function rehabilitation, reduction on the lymphedema in the limb homolateral to the surgery and improvement of the perception to general aspects of life in women submitted to breast cancer surgery. Subjects and Methods - Twenty-nine women with breast cancer submitted to mastectomy or segmentectomy with axillary dissection presenting lymphedema and/or decrease on the amplitude of the movements of upper limb homolateral to surgery were studied from February to December 2004. The women that accept to participate of the study were submitted to 24 acupuncture sessions once a week, with permanence time of needles of 30 minutes, totalizing a period of six months of treatment. The lymphedema and the amplitude of the movements? evaluation were performed at the beginning of treatment, throught critometry and goniometry. The evaluation of general aspects was performed through questionary with questions about welfare sensation, impact of the surgery on life, sleep, daily activities, weight sensation and puckering in the limb homolateral to the surgery through analogical visual scale with variation from zero (very well, very easy) to ten (very bad, very difficult). Statistical analysis was performed through the Friedman Test. Results: A significant improvement on the movement amplitude of shoulder flexion and abduction (p<00001) as well as lymphedema degree (p=0.0159). For the arm, forearm and wrist cirtometry values (circumference), no significant improvement between the different times of treatment was observed. A significant improvement in all parameters of general aspects evaluated was observed: welfare sensation (p=0.0001), impact of surgery on life (p=0.0008), sleep (p=0.0001), daily activities (p=0.0042), weight sensation (p=0.0001) and puckering (p<0.0001) in the limb homolateral to the surgery. Conclusions: Acupuncture showed to be efficient in all parameters evaluated, demonstrating to be a therapeutic alternative that should be used in the breast cancer post-surgery rehabilitation
