RESUMO

Language instruction is guided by the conception of the nature of language, its function and role in social practices and conceptions and postulated about how to teach and learn languages. The scope of research in Applied Linguistics is quite broad as it pertains to design challenges nature, known approach, present in all spheres of the complex process of teaching and learning of languages and one of these spheres is the material. Major changes in the paradigms of language teaching as well as the advent of new technologies have transformed the teaching material, giving it an increasingly multimodal nature (several semiotic modes for the production of meaning). Our focus is to research the relationship between the textual multimodality present in three materials for teaching Portuguese for foreigners published in Brazil and the approach that underlies these materials in view the texts as multimodal focus and starting point. The study highlights the multimodal nature of language and more intense focus on the communicative approach, with emphasis on processes of interaction requires that the text (verbal language) and image (not verbal) are combined to promote a meaningful communicative context. For such research, we focused on qualitative research methods. By the results, we can infer that multimodality is a part of language itself and it is crucial for the foreign students understanding of the syllabus.
