Foram identificadas 12 espécies de malófagos no Parque Zoológico Municipal Quinzinho de Barros, Sorocaba e Fundação Jardim Zoológico, Rio de Janeiro. Ciconiphilus pectiniventris em Cygnus atratus (Anseriformes, Anatidae); Kurodaia sp. em Buteo albicaudatus (Falconiformes, Accipitridae); Degeeriella sp. em Falco sparverius (Falconiformes, Falconidae); C

14. Characterization of Tyzzeria parvula (Kotlan, 1933) Klimes, 1963 oocysts (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) of the greylag goose (Anser anser Linnaeus, 1758) in Brazil. / Caracterização dos oocistos de Tyzzeria parvula (Kótlan, 1933) Klimes, 1963 (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) do ganso doméstico (Anser anser) no Brasil.
The principal objective of this research was to describe an coccidium found in the feces of greylag goose Anser anser Linnaeus, 1758. Based on morphometric analysis of these sporulated oocysts, they were classified as Tyzzeria parvula (Kótlan, 1933) Klimes, 1963. This coccidium was described for the firt time in goose of Brazil at rural and urban areas from

15. Ocorrência e caracterização molecular de Cryptosporidium spp. (Apicomplexa: Cryptosporidiidae) em aves domésticas e em aves exóticas mantidas em cativeiro no Brasil / Occurrence and molecular characterization of Cryptosporidium spp. (Apicomplexa: Cryptosporidiidae) in domestic and exotic birds kept in captivity in Brazil

Relationships between aquatic birds and the trophic state of freshwaters are not well known in tropical systems. In the present work the influence of some limnological variables on the structure of the aquatic bird comunnity was investigated for two distinct freshwater systems: The cascade of reservoirs in the middle and low portions of Tietê River (SP) and

18. Phorcotabanus cinereus (Wiedemann, 1821) (Diptera, Tabanidae), an ornithophilic species of Tabanid in Central Amazon, Brazil
In Central Amazon, Brazil, the tabanid Phorcotabanus cinereus (Wiedemann) was recorded attacking the native duck Cairina moschata (Linnaeus) (Anseriformes, Anatidae). The flight and behavior of the tabanid during the attacks and the host's defenses were videotaped and analyzed in slow motion. The tabanid was recorded flying rapidly around the heads of the du

19. Identification and Characterization of Avihepadnaviruses Isolated from Exotic Anseriformes Maintained in Captivity
Five new hepadnaviruses were cloned from exotic ducks and geese, including the Chiloe wigeon, mandarin duck, puna teal, Orinoco sheldgoose, and ashy-headed sheldgoose. Sequence comparisons revealed that all but the mandarin duck viruses were closely related to existing isolates of duck hepatitis B virus (DHBV), while mandarin duck virus clones were closely r

20. Serotyping of European isolates of Chlamydia psittaci from poultry and other birds.
A panel of five serovar-specific monoclonal antibodies which distinguish the five known avian serovars of Chlamydia psittaci was used to serotype 45 European avian Chlamydia psittaci isolates. Chlamydial antigen was grown in Buffalo green monkey (BGM) cells or in embryonated chicken eggs and was then inoculated into BGM cells. Serotyping was performed in an

21. Phylogenetic expression of Galα1-4Gal on avian glycoproteins: Glycan differentiation inscribed in the early history of modern birds
Glycoproteins containing Galα1-4Gal (galabiose) had been rarely found in vertebrates, except in a few species of birds and amphibians. We had previously reported that pigeon (Columba livia) egg white and serum glycoproteins are rich in N-glycans with Galα1-4Gal at nonreducing termini. To investigate the origin of Galα1-4Gal expression in avian evolution,

22. Light microscopic morphometry of the kidneys of fourteen avian species.
Kidney volume and the volume proportions of the cortex, medulla, blood vessels larger than capillaries and ureter and ureteral ducts were investigated in 61 birds from 14 species representing passeriformes, psittaciformes, podicipediformes, anseriformes, galliformes, and columbiformes. The kidneys were fixed in situ by perfusion via their arterial supply. Ki
