13. Inherited hemoglobin disorders in an Afro-Amazonian community: Saracura
The most common hemoglobinopathies, viz, hemoglobins S and C, and α-and β-thalassemias, were investigated through the molecular screening of 116 subjects from the community of Saracura, comprising fugitive African slaves from farms of the municipality of Santarém, in the west of Pará State, Brazilian Amazon. The observed frequency of the HBB*S gene (0.9%

14. Limits of Absolute Private Property: Fight of Marrons Communities Poça and Peropava by tenure in the Ribeira Valley / SP / Limites da propriedade privada absoluta: luta das comunidades quilombolas Poça e Peropava pelo direito de posse no Vale do Ribeira/SP
The Brazilian countryside has a very diverse peasantry, formed by social actors who cultivate the land with their families by increasing the supply of food in the city. This work emphasizes the peasant squatters who grow a small tract of land with their families, but without the right to property secured. Therefore, this dissertation discusses the clash betw

16. Application of an African Ancestry index as a genomic control approach in a brazilian population
Ten ancestry informative markers were investigated in 101 coronary artery disease patients and 102 healthy controls from a Southern Brazilian population, in order to determine if stratification occurs in this population. The degree of African admixture detected in this population was estimated to be as high as 6%, but no differences between cases and control

17. Population analysis of vitamin D receptor polymorphisms and the role of genetic ancestry in an admixed population
The vitamin D receptor (VDR) is an essential protein related to bone metabolism. Some VDR alleles are differentially distributed among ethnic populations and display variable patterns of linkage disequilibrium (LD). In this study, 200 unrelated Brazilians were genotyped using 21 VDR single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and 28 ancestry informative markers.

18. Worldwide genetic variation at the 3´-UTR region of the LDLR gene : possible influence of natural selection
The low density lipoprotein receptor gene (LDLR) contains many Alu insertions, and is especially Alu-rich at its 3 -untranslated region (3 -UTR). Previous studies suggested that the LDLR 3 -UTR could regulate gene expression by the stabilization of its mRNA. Given the faster Alu evolutionary rate, and wondering about its consequences in a possibly regulatory

19. Os Catopês de São Benedito em Montes Claros: rastros de uma ancestralidade mineira negra e festiva.
The imagery shows a lot about a time, a place and a people. The festivals of the city of Montes Claros in the north of Minas Gerais are deeply related to the Catholic religious services. Many of these cults were added to the African traditions in a region of high concentration of blacks who lived in Quilombos, farms and cities. The imagery of the Congo of th

20. Prevalence of common α-thalassemia determinants in south Brazil: importance for the diagnosis of microcytic anemia
Alpha thalassemia has not been systematically investigated in Brazil. In this study, 493 unrelated individuals from the southernmost Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul were screened for deletional forms of α-thalassemia. One hundred and one individuals had microcytic anemia (MCV < 80 fL) and a normal hemoglobin pattern (Hb A2 < 3.5% and Hb F < 1%). The su

21. Analysis of paternal lineages in Brazilian and African populations
The present-day Brazilian population is a consequence of the admixture of various peoples of very different origins, namely, Amerindians, Europeans and Africans. The proportion of each genetic contribution is known to be very heterogeneous throughout the country. The aim of the present study was to compare the male lineages present in two distinct Brazilian

22. Distribution of SDF1-3'A polymorphisms in three different ethnic groups from Brazil
A mutation described as a G-to-A transition has been reported in SDF-1 gene (SDF1-3'A), being prevalent in all ethnic groups, except in Africans. This mutation is associated with the onset of AIDS progression. Our aim was to identify the frequency of this allele in different groups from Brazil: Tiriyó and Waiampi Amerindian tribes (Asian ancestry); selected

23. Geographic patterns of genome admixture in Latin American mestizos
The large and diverse population of Latin America is potentially a powerful resource for elucidating the genetic basis of complex traits through admixture mapping. However, no genome-wide characterization of admixture across Latin America has yet been attempted. Here, we report an analysis of admixture in thirteen Mestizo populations (i.e. in regions of main

24. Agostinho da Silva e o Centro de Estudos Afro-Orientais (CEAO): a primeira experiência institucional dos estudos africanos no Brasil / Agostinho da Silva and CEAO: one institutional experience of African Studies in Brazil
Discussions about brazilian identity, between the mid-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, saw the Negro as a problem for the affirmation of this country as a nation. The interpretation of european precedence, particularly portuguese, was seen as a solution to this problem, to characterize secondary participation of blacks and indians in this process. T
