1. The Role of Next-Generation Sequencing in the Diagnosis of Lysosomal Storage Disorders
Abstract Next-generation sequencing (NGS) panels are used widely in clinical diagnostics to identify genetic causes of various monogenic disease groups including neurometabolic disorders and, more recently, lysosomal storage disorders (LSDs). Many new challenges have been introduced through these new technologies, both at the laboratory level and at the bioi

2. Molecular identification of viral agents associated with acute conjunctivitis: a prospective controlled study
Abstract Background: Viral conjunctivitis are the most frequent infections in ophthalmology clinics. The diagnosis is usually relying on clinical findings and medical history. However, topical antibiotics are often used unnecessarily addition to symptomatic treatment because of unsure agents. We aimed to detect the Adenovirus, Coxsackievirus and Enterovirus

3. Foundations of Paleoparasitology
Unprecedented initiative in the world, the book compiles the available knowledge on the subject and presents the state-of-the-art in paleoparasitology – term coined about 30 years ago by Brazilian Fiocruz researcher Luiz Fernando Ferreira, pioneer in this science which is concerned with the study of parasites in the past. Multidisciplinary by essence, paleoparasitology gathers contributions from social scientists, biologists, historians, archaeologists, pharmacists, doctors and many other professionals, either in biomedical or humanities fields. With varied applications such as in evolutionary or migration studies, their results often depend on the association between laboratory findings and cultural remains. The book is divided into four parts - Parasites, Hosts, and Human Environment; Parasites Remains Preserved in Various Materials and Techniques in Microscopy and Molecular Diagnostics; Parasite Findings in Archeological Remains: a paleographic view; and Special Studies and Perspectives. Signed by authors from various countries such as Argentina, USA, Germany and France, the book has chapters devoted to the discoveries of paleoparasitology on all continents.

4. Processamento de sinais de descargas parciais em tempo real com base em wavelets e seleção de coeficientes adaptativa espacialmente
On-line partial discharge (PD) analysis is a highly pursued feature due to the economy related to scheduled shutdowns, disassembling and transport. Nevertheless, on-site PD measurements are frequently limited by interferences found in high-voltage facilities, a situation that imposes the continued development of PD signal processing methods. In the last year

5. Simulação de espectros do radical C2* para estudos de combustão / Simulation of C2* radical spectra for combustion studies
The diagnostics of particular species in combustion processes is the key for the development of combustion devices, such as burners, chambers, etc. and also to the understanding of these processes through the study of chemical reaction mechanisms with the aid of mathematical models. One of the diagnostic techniques employed with great success is the emission

6. Infecção na monitoração intraventricular da pressão intracraniana com drenagem contínua do líquido cefalorraquiano. / Infection in the intraventricular monitoring of the intracranial pressure with continuous drainage of cerebrospinal fluid.
Intraventricular monitoring of the intracranial pressure (ICP) with continuous drainage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is already a widespread procedure in neurosurgical practice and considered as of great diagnostic, therapeutic and prognostic importance due to its precision. However, as it is an invasive method, it presents a potential risk of complications,

8. Development of a quantitative competitive reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction for the quantification of growth hormone gene expression in pigs
After the advent of the genome projects, followed by the discovery of DNA polymorphisms, basic understanding of gene expression is the next focus to explain the association between polymorphisms and the level of gene expression, as well as to demonstrate the interaction among genes. Among the various techniques for the investigation of transcriptional profil

9. UM SISTEMA DE DIAGNÓSTICO DE EQUIPAMENTOS ELÉTRICOS DE ALTA TENSÃO COM BASE NA OCORRÊNCIA DE DESCARGAS PARCIAIS / A DIAGNOSTICS SYSTEM OF HIGH VOLTAGE POWER APPARATUS BASED IN PARTIAL DISCHARGES OCURRENCE
High voltage (HV) power apparatus are fundamental parts in the industrial process. It is also well Known that electrical insulation systems are the parts that present more problems through the life cycle of an HV apparatus. The dielectric properties of materials are altered during operation time and for this reason they should be monitored. Among the main an

12. Hematuria and a complex congenital heart defect in a newborn foal
A 16-hour-old foal was referred for evaluation of hematuria. A pansystolic heart murmur and left thoracic thrill were detected; laboratory diagnostics and ultrasonography identified a complex congenital heart defect. The diagnosis was confirmed at postmortem.
