1. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and thrombocytopenia IV: its association with granulocytopenia
ABSTRACT Introduction: We have previously shown that some patients present thrombocytopenia (less than 100 × 109/L platelets) in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). To further explore the nature of this association, we have now analyzed the association of thrombocytopenia with neutropenia (less than 0.5 × 109/L granulocytes) in NAFLD. Material and

2. Splenectomy prior to antiviral therapy in patients with hepatitis C virus related decompensated cirrhosis
Patients with hepatitis C virus-related decompensated cirrhosis can benefit frominterferonbased antiviral therapy, but the common complication of cytopenia is a contraindication for this treatment. Splenectomy prior to interferon therapy may alleviate this problem. To investigate whether splenectomy improves the efficacy of antiviral therapy, 13 interferonna

3. Relationship between splenomegaly and hematologic findings in patients with hepatosplenic schistosomiasis
BACKGROUND Schistosomiasis is a tropical disease. Patients who develop hepatosplenic schistosomiasis have clinical findings including periportal fibrosis, portal hypertension, cytopenia, splenomegaly and gastrointestinal hemorrhage. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to analyze the hemostatic and hematologic findings of patients with schistosomiasis and

4. Avaliação da resposta sorologica a imunização contra hepatites A e B em pacientes com hipertensão portal / Serologic response to hepatitis A and B in patients with portal hypertension

Portal vein thrombosis (PVT) is relatively rare disease that affects adults and children, consisting of a blockage of the portal vein, and portal hypertension (PH) is the most frequent development problem. The knowledge regarding to the clinical manifestations and diagnostics are not yet been used into the routine of the general pediatrician, pediatric gastr

7. Surgical indication in Schistosomiasis mansoni portal hypertension: follow-up from 1985 to 2001
The study had the objective to evaluate the benefits of surgical indication for portal hypertension in schistosomiasis patients followed from 1985 to 2001. Schistosoma mansoni eggs were confirmed by at least six stool examinations or rectal biopsy. Clinical examination, abdominal ultrasonography, and digestive endoscopy confirmed the diagnosis of esophageal

8. Hiperesplenismo na esquistossomose mansÃnica : o baÃo e as cÃlulas sanguÃneas antes e depois de esplenectomia
Seventy eight patients with chronic hepatosplenic schistosomiasis underwent left gastric vein ligature and also splenectomy as a complementary measure for treatment of portal hypertension after upper gastrintestinal tract bleeding. Weight and clinical measurements of spleens were taken in order to study their relationship with blood counts, the variability b

9. Ebstein's anomaly associated with splenomegaly and reversible hypersplenism.
A case of Ebstein's anomaly associated with chronic right heart failure, hepatosplenomegaly, and the haematological features of hypersplenism is presented. The haematological abnormalities were corrected after tricuspid valve replacement but recurred with the reemergence of clinical features of right heart failure.

10. Progressive multifocal leucoencephalopathy and primary hypersplenism: With a note on the association between disease of the reticuloendothelial system and progressive multifocal leucoencephalopathy
A patient with progressive multifocal leucoencephalopathy was found to have primary hypersplenism, a benign disorder of the reticuloendothelial system. He failed to respond to conventional doses of corticosteroids. The clinical and pathological manifestations of his illness are described, and the development of the histopathological changes in the nervous sy

11. Haemorrhagic pericardial effusion in adult Gaucher's disease.
A case of adult Gaucher's disease presenting with haemorrhagic pericardial effusion is reported. Three similar cases have been reported. The possible aetiological factors in this case are assessed, the likely cause being thrombocytopenia due to hypersplenism associated with Gaucher's disease.

12. 111Indium-labelled white blood cells in the diagnosis of Felty's syndrome.
The use of isotope scanning of the spleen in conjunction with 51Cr-labelled red blood cells has become an established technique in the evaluation of patients with hypersplenism. As far as we are aware the similar technique using labelled white blood cells to demonstrate splenic sequestration in a neutropenic patient has not been described. We report a case w
