1. Mercury content in the fur of jaguars (Panthera onca) from two areas under different levels of gold mining impact in the Brazilian Pantanal
ABSTRACT The Pantanal is the largest inland wetland in the world and is under increasing anthropogenic threats, including long-term regionally intensive gold mining practices. Gold mining activities are known to cause the release of harmful pollutants such as mercury (Hg) to the surrounding environment. Jaguars (Panthera onca (Linnaeus, 1758)) are apex preda

2. Poluentes orgânicos e isótopos estáveis no ecossistema da Baía do Almirantado, Ilha Rei George, Antártida / Organic pollutants and stable isotopes in the ecosystem of Admiralty Bay, King George Island, Antarctica

Methylmercury was determined in water and aquatic biota from Guanabara Bay. Trophic transfer of methylmercury was observed between trophic levels from prey (microplankton, mesoplankton and fish with different feeding habits) to top predator (pelagic demersal fish). Top predator fish presented the highest methylmercury concentrations (320.3 ± 150.7 mg kg-1 d

6. Acumulação de compostos organoclorados (PCBs, DDTs e HCB) em tecido hepático de delfinídeos (Cetacea, Mammalia) do Estado do Rio de Janeiro / Organochlorine compounds accumulation (PCBs, DDTs and HCB) in hepatic tissue of delphinids (Cetacea, Mammalia) from Rio de Janeiro State
Over the past decades the research on marine organisms contamination by organochlorine compounds (OCs) has been intensified, allied to the utilization of some species as sentinels of the environmental quality related to organic pollutants. Among these species, cetaceans stand out as animals that, between other characteristics, have great longevity, high lipi

7. Toxic effects of cadmium on the microalgae Lingulodinium polyedrum using high performance liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) / Análise dos efeitos tóxicos de cádmio sobre a microalga Lingulodinium polyedrum utilizando cromatografia líquida de alta eficiência acoplada à espectrometria de massas (LC-MS/MS)
Given the increase of environmentally harmful human activities, in particular the ones injurious to the aquatic environment, it is important to elucidate the defense mechanisms utilized by organisms exposed to damaging agents. Those species can later be suggested to be used as pollution bioindicators or bioremediatiors. Algae are of particular importance bec

8. Cytogenotoxicity biomarkers in fat snook Centropomus parallelus from Cananéia and São Vicente estuaries, SP, Brazil
The aquatic environment receives many contaminants that can induce damages at the molecular, biochemical, cellular and physiological levels. Centropomus parallelus , an important food resource for local populations, is a predator fish that feeds on small fishes and benthic invertebrates, thus being vulnerable to the bioconcentration and biomagnification pr

9. Ocorrência de compostos organoclorados em Euphausia superba e em ovos gorados de pingüins do gênero Pygoscelis / Occurrence of organochlorine compounds in Euphasia superba and uhatched eggs of Pygoscelis genus penguins
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides are compounds that do not occur naturally in the environment and are not easily degraded by chemical or microbiological action. Their study in the environment is important due to persistence, toxicity, liposolubility and consequent biomagnification. For these reasons, they represent the majority

10. Biodisponibilidade de mercurio e outros metais-traço em sedimentos do Rio Cubatão, Sistema Estuarino de Santos-Cubatão (SP) / Bioavailability of mercury and other trace-metals in sediments of Cubatão River, Santos-Cubatão Estuarine System (SP)
Coastal-estuarine ecosystems from the south of São Paulo State are presently degraded specially in Cubatão municipality, in consequence of population concentration and, industrial and petrochemical complexes. These environmental impacts have begun in the 1950s after the construction of the largest Latin America petrochemical complex in the Cubatão city.

The studies carried out in different parts of the world about the pesticides use and the impacts that they can cause to the environment, are one of the priority actions for the agriculture development, mainly for those pesticides that are persistents in the biotic and abiotic environment, such as the heptachlor insecticide, which is still illegally used for

The Rio Grande branch is a part of Billings Complex and is isolated from the central body by Anchieta Dam. This reservoir is located in São Paulo Metropolitan Region and has multiple uses, including water supply, recreation, leisure, receptor of domestic and industrial wastewater. At the present work, the water column was studied in 6 stations along the res
