RESUMO

This work aimed to understand the phenomena involved in violence against children as well as in factors associated to that problem. The study was carried out in the Centro de Atendimento Psicossocial (Psychosocial Assistance Center), CAPS, a local institution in Campo Grande, the capital city of the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, which offers assistance to children who are victims of abuse. The study was divided into the following parts. Firstly, the collection of data at the Secretaria Municipal de Assistência Social e do Trabalho (Local Secretary of Social and Work Assistance)- SAST, related to violence epidsodes against children in Campo Grande, happening between 1997 and 1998. Secondly, collection of data at the Centro de Atendimento Psicossocial (CAPS) about children who were victims of violence between February and December 1998 . Thirdly, interview with 12 professionals at CAPS and finally, observation and register of eleven cases of violence against children and their families. The registers of statistic data at SAST about victimized children showed that in 1997 there were 2637 reports in which physical violence was most frequent against children between zero and six years old (0 to 6). In those cases the mother was the main violating agent, being responsible for 43% of the aggressive behavior and most of the victims were boys. In 1998, 2520 reports were made in the same institution (SATS), but the violence in evidence was now related to the inadequacy of family life involving children aged between zero and six. Mothers were again the major aggressors in 38% of the reports. At the Centro de Atendimento Psicossocial (CAPS), data concerning victimized children in February, April, May, June, July, August, September, October and November show that children between zero and six years old were the worst treated, with predominance of physical violence. Mothers remained on the top of the list of aggressors in the reports. In order to complement data collection, the institutions technical staff was interviewed about various concepts related to childrens problems such as childhood, violence and violence against children and understanding of social policies for childrens assistance. Each staff member (04 psycologists, 02 social workers, 01 social educator, 02 social assistants, the CAPS coordenator and 02 tutor advisors) was asked about details of their own jobs concerning themes such as aims and goals of CAPS institution, positive and negative aspects of each professionals performance and main difficulties encountered. The answers were given in a distinct and complex way. Finally there was the register and observation of eleven cases of children who were victims of any kind of violence. There were seven cases of male abused children and four of female ones. The most relevant results lead to the conclusion that the main cause of family life disruption was the number of parents separations and parents addiction to alcohol. Families poor living conditions also affected children seriously. In all the cases studied terrible consequences for children were noticed such as prostitution, aggressiveness, school problems, visual deficiency and fear of other people. As a conclusion, this study points out the possibilities of work for psychologists dealing with issues related to violence against children.
