RESUMO

ABSTRACT VELLOZO, Júlio. The Fat Dom Quixote in the Desert of Oblivion. Oliveira Lima The building of a narrative of the nationality. 2012. Dissertation (Masters Degree in Brazilian Cultures) The subject of our study is the work of the historian and diplomat from Pernambuco, Oliveira Lima, developed between 1895 and 1928. Oliveira Lima built a narrative of the nationality that valued the role of the Portuguese colonization and affirmed as a distinguishing element of the national traditions the agreed transitions, the lack of ruptures and the tolerance toward the social and racial differences. This interpretation was elaborated right in a moment when anti-iberian and anti-monarchic visions were predominant, which put Lima in the counter-current of history and History, changing him into a Fat Quixote, in Gilberto Freyres at the same time acidic and affectionate definition. The author considered that three fundamental moments had built the nationality: the coming of the Portuguese royalty to Brazil, the way the independence from Portugal happened, and the kingdom of Dom Pedro II. Among a very wide work, the triad of writings that informs this narrative of the nationality is, in our understanding, composed by: Dom João VI no Brasil (1909), O Movimento da Independência (1921) e O Império Brasileiro (1928).
