RESUMO

The woods of Dois IrmÃos are located in the mucipality of Recife, State of Pernambuco, and constitute one of the few remainders of the Atlantic rainforest within the State. This ecosystem was made a State Park in 1998, encompassing and area of 387.4 hectares, including within its perimeter the forest reservation, the water reservoires of Prata, do Meio and Dois IrmÃos, and the zoo-botanical garden. Environmentally speaking the area is important in different ways. Firstly, because of their significant biodiversity, the woods are focused by many scientific researches; secondly, they also play a remarkable role as a âgreen areaâ that influences the local climate. The area is also the source of many watersheds that provide drink water to a significant part of Recifeâs population. Last, the woods of Dois IrmÃos serve as an area for the practice of outdoor activities and recreation for many city dwellers. Notwithstanding, in spite of being a conservation unity under comprehensive legal protection, this ecosystem is being constantly altered as a consequence of several forms of environmentally impacting land uses practiced by the population that lives in its surroundings. Such land use practices vary from the opening of tracks and cutting of trees, to the dumping of domestic garbage and ousting of untreated sewers in the local drainage systems. Therefore, this work aims at identifying land use forms in this conservation unit and establishing a relationship between the spatial transformation suffered by the area and the ever growing occupation of its perimeter. Finally, it was found that despite the area be protected by several environmental laws, it represents a true stage for a confrontation between the contemporary environmental agenda of the city and the social problems faced by the population of Recife
