RESUMO

Brazilian Biodiesel Program aims at the insertion of family agriculture in the biodiesel production chain, especially at the Northeast region (in this case, providing castor beans as the raw material for biodiesel). However, there are some evidence that this incorporation is not being met. For example, according to the Brazilian Biodiesel Program biodiesel production should include raw material from many different sources, but after three years, more than 80% of this production is based on soy beans. This objective of this dissertation is to identify the main limitations to the efficient performance of family productive systems of castor beans called family preenterprises in the Brazilian Northeast region. Theoretical and methodological frameworks for this dissertation came from productive chain analysis and family agriculture. Data collection was made using techniques related to Rapid Rural Appraisal. The analysis used measures of central tendencies and content analysis. Castor beans productive chain analysis indicates that these systems are confronting several limitations to their efficient performance. These limitations have diverse nature and are originated in the productive system itself or in its environment. In the conclusion some possible strategies aiming at overcoming these limitations are suggested.
