RESUMO

The utilization of the sanitary landfill gas for electric power generation shows how the solid waste environmental problems can be reverted to environmental and economical benefits. This screen shows results about waste composition in sanitary landfills and investigates its utilization as energy source through biogas combustion. A model based on finite volume formulation was studied, using the commercial code Fluent (version 6.2), which includes the template K-E of turbulence, the finite rates generalized model of Arrhenius and Magnunssen for chemical reactions calculations, and, the discrete transfer radiation model to simulate the combustion process in industrial furnaces. The objective of this study is to investigate the application of this model to simulate the biogas combustion process, to evaluate the feasibility of using the biogas as energy source and to predict the formation of pollutants such as NO, CO and SO2. In the combustion process simulations, models using one global reaction (1 step), to the hydro carbonates oxidation, and models using two reactions (2 steps) were investigated. To estimate the NO formation, the thermal NO, prompt NO and fuel NO mechanisms have been investigated. The fuel NO mechanism prevails into this process. Results show the possible application of the model studied for the biogas combustion process investigating. According to the temperature and flows levels found, it is possible to estimate that the biogas can be, as energy source, an important alternative. Experimental studies, however, are necessary to better use the biogas.
