RESUMO

The bacterial meningitis is an infection, which causes inflammation of the meninges that can lead to permanent neurological and/or motor related damages when affecting individuaIs less than 5 years old. The disease was studied from the moment it becomes a social disease due to the pre-established thoughts that allowing individuaIs to recognize as a social disease. Meningitis causes a strong emotional burden in children parents and a psychological support becomes a necessity once society creates several misconceptions related to how disease is acquired. This is a qualitative study with 23 mothers and fathers of children suffering from bacterial meningitis from both sexes and with ages from zero to eight years old. These children were all treated at the Pediatric Infectology Ward at the "Hospital das Clínicas", State University of Campinas. It was analyzed how parents understood the bacterial meningitis, how pediatric doctors communicated the disease to the parents and how any irrational beliefs about the disease was overcame. It was found that that parents do understand the seriously of the disease but not its meaning. There are major gaps between the interaction of parents and doctors mostly because doctors do not understand the parents needs during the disease, parents do not understand the medical terminology used by doctors and finally because doctors are focused in the child acute problem and not in the aftermnath and consequences of the disease
