Prescrição de medicamentos em serviço de emergencia psiquiatrica : um estudo farmacoepidemiologico

RESUMO

Background. Psychotherapeutic drugs constitute the main therapeutic approach in psychiatric emergency services (PES). Few studies have evaluated the prescription patterns of drugs used in these settings. Objective. This study describes drug use as stat medication at a Psychiatric Emergency Service. Methods. A descriptive retrospective study evaluated the medical charts of ali consecutive visits to the PES of the university hospital of the State University of Campinas during January 2001. Results. Df the 230 patients (258 visits) 116 were male, with a mean age of 36.9 :t 14.3. Their main diagnoses were severe mood disorders, schizophrenic disorders, and disorders related to drug abuse. Stat medication was prescribed in 81 visits (31.7%). The most prescribed drugs were: haloperidol, promethazine, diazepam, midazolam, chlorpromazine and vitamins, mainly by intramuscular route. Associations were frequent. Patients characteristics associated to stat medication: male, intoxicated by drugs, brought to the PES, and thereafter hospitalized. Conclusion. The pharmacotherapeutic interventions addressed mainly patients with severe psychiatric problems. Guidelines for pharmacotherapeutic approach in PES may help to promote more rational drug use in the PES setting.
