RESUMO

This research aimed at contributing to the area of Portuguese to Speakers of Other Languages (PSOL), with a focus on teacher education, which is an emerging issue at the moment. In order to achieve this aim, a survey of the universities which promote the teaching and research on PSOL in Brazil was carried out. The analysis was guided by studies of foreign language teaching which focus on teacher education. These studies emphasize that teacher education courses should take into account the student-teachers? beliefs about the teaching/learning processes. Thus, teachers and student-teachers from a Language Course were surveyed in order to identify their beliefs about PSOL teaching. The data for this research were collected through questionnaires containing a teacher beliefs inventory and open-ended questions. The discussion shows the respondents believe PSOL teachers need specific education, what corroborates the findings in PSOL literature. However, there are few studies which focus on investigating how PSOL teachers learn to teach and what constitutes to the knowledge base needed in this field. Based on the contemporary paradigm for foreign language teachers education, this research aims at enabling teachers to reflect on PSOL pedagogy and showing ways of including PSOL teacher education in Language Courses. The results of this research show two implications related to inclusion of PSOL Courses in the context investigated: 1. PSOL Courses to the academic and external communities; and 2. an especial subject involving PSOL teaching in the Language Course. This study, therefore, proposes directions for research on PSOL teacher education, through analysis of the programs? underlying approaches, both at pre-service and in-service levels, that is, how teachers learn to teach or develop their knowledge in the course of their experience as teachers.
