RESUMO

This dissertation opens a discussion about strategic planning, as performed by mining transnational corporations, with a special emphasis on RTZ. Theoretical considerations are provided for the analysis of these companies in general. A broad view of the structural changes undergone by the world mineral industry is presented, including the impacts of the New Economy and the Global Economy, which command many of the processes prevailing in today s world. The major mining transnational corporations are listed and properly ranked in the more recent years. Other aspects are discussed, inter alia their preferences by "High Volume" or "High Value" commodities. RTZ from UK is selected for a case study, composed by historical aspects, main operations, expansion programmes, and also the analysis of strategies, prospects for the future and major trends. In short, RTZ is considered to be a "mineral -driven company" (rather than a "technology-driven" or a "business opportunity-driven company"), trying to strength its position in areas of proved experience, maximizing competitive and commercial advantages, and promoting an intense diversification strategy, either for selected minerals or regarding geographical locations. Its vast array of geographical options tends to be great1y augmented as long as an increasing number of developing countries are liberalizing their mineral legislation in order to attract foreign investment
