RESUMO

This study analyses patterns, chromatics and gilding in Bahian Sacred Catholic sculpture and demonstrates variations in decorations and ornamentations achieved by saint sculptors during the 18th and 19th centuries. Forty-four religious images were selected for study, according to the criteria of good quality painting technique and minimum possible intervention. The research methodology was synthetic analysis, approaching the study object through material and technical, formal and stylized analysis, followed by a description of the results achieved. Extensive photographic documentation, drawings and computer graphics allowed for improved visualization of the object and facilitated comparative analysis. Following these analyses, three polychrome categories were created, according to pattern similarities. The first category, the Fleuron Pattern, was essentially characterized by large gilded fleurons surrounded by floral arrangements. The second category, the Volute Pattern, contained volutes, elongated branches and trefoil leaves, while the third category, the Fleuron/Volute Pattern was characterised by a combination of the two aforementioned categories: fleurons appear with the volutes, branches and trefoils. The study complements analysis of the techniques used by the old incarnadining artists who painted religious sculptures, thus facilitating the identification of explanatory signs relevant to research. In parallel to the object analysis, a brief history of Sacred Catholic sculpture from its inception was carried out in order to understand this art form within the cultural context in which it was produced. Primary documentary and bibliographic sources supported the research and a survey was conducted of those artists who sculptured, painted and gilded images in the centuries studied, revealing something of their identities.
