RESUMO

The global use of drugs classified as emerging contaminants has become a new environmental problem due to possible contamination of surface and supply water and may impact the environment and cause harm to public health. In the city of Rio Grande, RS, Brazil, the supply of drinking water is accomplished by CORSAN (Companhia de Saneamento Riograndense), which collects water from the São Gonçalo Channel, which links two lagoons: Patos and Mirim lagoons. In this work an analytical method using solid phase extraction (SPE) and liquid chromatography coupled to a source at Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometry (LC-APCI-MS/MS) was developed and validated for the determination of atenolol, caffeine, diclofenac, fluoxetine and sulfamethoxazole pharmaceuticals in samples of surface water and public supply water. The method was validated according to parameters by INMETRO and SANCO. The limits of detection ranged from 0.053 to 0.53 μg L-1, while for the limits of quantification the range was 0.16 to 1.6 mg L-1. All the compounds showed excellent linearity, with correlation coefficients greater than 0.99. Recoveries were in the range of 70 to 120%, with RSD lower than 20% for all compounds. Through multiple reaction monitoring (MRM), two different transitions (precursor ion - product ion) were selected for each compound, one for quantitation and the other for confirmation purposes, increasing the selectivity of the method. The matrix effect was evaluated, and two of the compounds presented suppressed signal. The matrix effect was offset by superimposing the array calibration
