RESUMO

The newborn infant personal relationships are usually restricted to the family setting, especially the mother. Over the years, friends will be part of the child universe and they will play an important role in their social life, in their emotional and cognitive development. Mothers play a central role in the social integration of their children, however, little is known about their role regarding their childrens first friendships. Thus, this research aimed at investigating how mothers of children from one to three years old perceived and interfered in their childrens first friendships. Twenty mothers living in Vitoria and Vila Velha, ES, have been interviewed. The data were organized and analyzed qualitatively. The investigated points were the following: the general aspects of friendship (concept and criteria for friendship, presence in the children life and negative aspects), friends network (number, sex, age, origin, the best friend and the relationship of friends parents with themselves), references to friends in their absence, shared activities and places of meeting, the profile of the first friend and the beginning of friendship (social and environmental aspects, historical origin and development of friendships), remarkable episodes and the facilitation of friendship by mothers. Most mothers acknowledged friendships in their childrens life from the age of approximately 18 months. The first friends were children from the family, the neighborhood or a religious community to which the family belonged. Mothers participated actively in the first friendships of their children, enabling encounters, interpreting these relations and serving as mediators between their children interpersonal relationships and the socio-cultural structures.
