RESUMO

With regard to the body, ethics and esthetics there are several theoretical contributions, mainly on the philosophic field. However, a study that searches for interfaces between what I name ?ethic and esthetic body sense?, more specifically from the popular gestures, still needs further investigations. Based on this understanding, the present research aims at analyzing the ethic-esthetic sense of the body in the popular culture, identifying the dialogical relations between ethics and esthetics that leads to the structuring of the gesture field in popular communities. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the philosophic and historic relations between ethics and esthetics; discuss the body as both a product/producer of culture and a way of accomplishing the ethic-esthetic sense; investigate how the ethics leads to the esthetic configuration of the body in the popular culture, and how this same esthetic structuring leads to ethic directions; realize how the ethic-esthetic sense occurs in popular culture groups, identifying possibilities of gesture structuring. Theoretical investigations were used by means of incursions on the philosophy history and on anthropology, as well as an ethnographic-type developed study in Maracatu communities, in Recife City, Pernambuco State. The research points out that the body, as a cultural structuring, follows collective norms, established by a historically constructed morality and esthetics, which are transmitted, considered and resignified in the different social contexts. Such norms define the collective convention in what concerns the use of gestures and corporal techniques related to each popular cultural community. The ethic-esthetic sense structuring occurs based on the community behavior rules, which lead to the outlining of their corporal techniques and morality; by the principles and values that characterize what is adequate and fair; by the sense of collective existence, religiosity and tradition preservation; by the competition rules imposed by external sections; by the game of conformism and resistance that make people to be susceptibly invaded by the cultural industry and to fight against this invasion; by the cultural dynamism and necessity of social recognition; by the denouncement on the human afflictions. Such reflections identify the existence of a singular rationality, different from the occidental logic and that, therefore, seems to be subjugated to it. It is in this sense that this study might establish itself as a way of intervention, mainly educational; as a possibility of looking at the ?other side? of the reason
