RESUMO

The purpose of this study is to identify characteristics and tendencies of the mechanicist paradigm present in the Official Science Curricular Guide of Para (Brazil), in order to contribute to the discussion regarding new directions in environmental education. This search presupposes that the presentation, in the school curriculum, of concepts and values based on mechanicist ideas tend to accentuate the human exploratory relationship with other environmental components. The epistemological conception used as reference, attributes to the mechanicist paradigm the position of the most important concept in the construction of values and practices of occidental society, since the advent of Modern Science. The curriculum analysis uses, as basic categories, the fragmentary, scientific and anthropocentric views of the environment, understood as expressions of the mechanicist paradigm. The significant presence of mechanicist manifestations in all documents was confirmed, with varying emphases in references to the categories and their respective indicators. There is no clear tendency of increase or decrease in these manifestations through the decades, with the exception of the most recent orientations that have the intention to overcome the mechanicist paradigm.
