RESUMO

The establishment of a coastal zone tourist destination occurs in accordance with one of two models, which differ from each other depending on how the use and occupation of the space happen. In one model, the destination is "discovered", the tourists â or the tourism â start to use and occupy it, having next the general infrastructure of support installed according to the demand. In this case, the establishment of destination occurs as a natural phenomenon, unplanned and reactive. This is a "spontaneousâ model. In the other model, the destination is defined, receives general infrastructure of support and then the tourists â or the tourism â start to use and occupy it. In this case, the establishment of destination occurs as an artificial phenomenon, planned and proactive. This is an "induced" model. Both models â the spontaneous model and the induced model â represent the extremes of a continuum of establishments of coastal zone tourist destinations. Obviously, in such continuum, the ideal model of establishment is the induced one. From this problematic, the problem arose â how to create a model to elaborate an appropriate sustainable management system for a established coastal zone tourist destination, based on its general infrastructure and on its tourist and hotel enterprises? â and the goal â to propose a model for the elaboration of this system. To solve the problem and achieve the goal, we have: (1) approached concepts and definitions related to (1.1) development, management, system and sustainable tourism â broad themes â and (1.2) general infrastructure, tourism and hotel enterprises, leisure hotels and small hotels, and small enterprises â specific themes; (2) used a multi-method that combined (2.1) exploratory and descriptive studies, (2.2) bibliographic and documentary research, (2.3) qualitative and quantitative approaches and (2.4) field research; and (3) delimited, as reference space for research, Porto de Galinhas, in the municipality of Ipojuca, in the state of Pernambuco. Finally, the demonstration of the response to the problem was a process of model conception and, thus, the demonstration of the goal achievement was a proposition of a model.
