RESUMO

Rabie is a neurotropic zoonosis infectum-contagious, whose persistence is mainly related to the street dogs, low immunity of the dog population and reduced adhesion to the laboratorial diagnosis, due to difficulty of collection and transport of the used material (brain). The cervical medulla can be considered the portion of the central nervous system of more viable access to the collected, has carried and stockage from samples destined to the rabies diagnosis, in function of its anatomy and localization, as well as, for being the compulsory way of the viruses, as much centrifugal course as centripetal course. This work was carried out with the aim to evaluate the effectiveness of the cervical medulla as material for the rabies laboratorial diagnosis. Used a brain tissue from rabid dog was isolated, gave for the Center of Zoonosis Control of the Ceará, Brazil. This sample was intracerebral inoculated in three Rattus norvegicus (wistar) and after the death of the first animal and confirmation for direct fluorescent antibody test (IFAT), its brain and cervical medulla were macerated in NaCl 0.9% and filtered. The viral suspensions were intramuscular inoculated in the internal face of the thigh of five rats, respectively. After the death of the animals, the brains and the medullas were macerated, filtered and intracerebral inoculated in two respective groups of 25 animals each, being carried through IFAT of the animals for confirmation of the Rabies. All the animals inoculated with the viral suspensions with brain or medulla cervical and by intramuscular or intracerebral inoculated, death and they were positive for rabies for the IFAT, evidencing that cervical medulla is so efficient how much the brain to be used as material of election in the routine diagnosis of the rabies.
