RESUMO

This work had the following objectives: to elaborate a map of basin land use by properties based on Ikonos II ortho image; to automatically delimit the permanent preservation areas; to evaluate the dynamics of the fragmentation process; and to identify the occurrence of land use conflict by properties on the São Bartolomeu stream basin, located at the Zona da Mata mineira region in Viçosa, Minas Gerais. Using the geo-processing resources available, a map of the geometric cadastre was obtained of 292 properties, with a minimum area of 725.48 m2, maximum of 212.00 ha and medium area of 9.68 ha, with only three properties having more than four fiscal modules. Based on a visual interpretation, nine land use loud cover classes were mapped :pasture; natural forest; coffee plantation;agriculture; cultivated forest; urban area; hydrography;facilities built; and access roads. Following the definitions of the Forest Codeand Resolutions 302 and 303 of CONAMA, delimitation was carried out of the permanent preservation areas (PPAs) located in the higher third of the sub basins (1,037.32 ha); steep slopes greater than 45 degrees (5.51 ha); springwaters and their respective areas of contribution (436,06 ha); riparian zones (325,96 ha); and on upper third of hilltops (27,96 ha), summing 1.530,67 ha (54.15 %) of the total area ofthe basin of 2.826,83 ha. An analysis was then made ofland use conflict under the environmental aspect, by comparing the land use map with the permanent preservation area map. The area inadequately used corresponded to 933.32 ha (60.98 %), with the classes pasture corresponding to 613.12 ha (50.79%) and coffee to 109.02 ha(51.46 %) being the main occurrences in these areas. Out of the total APP, 597.35 ha (39.03 %) are protected. In the study area, 78 forest fragments were identified and mapped, with the smallest area being 0.16 ha and the largest being 234.58 ha. Most of these fragments present an elongated shape, since the mean circularity index was 0.339. As for the private protected land, of the 292 rural properties mapped, 41 (14.04 %) have more than 20% of the forest cover located outside their PPA areas and the remaining 251 do not comply with the reserve demarcation legislation.
