RESUMO

Computed Tomography (CT) is frequently used for planning implants. But, it is a consensus that its use deals with a high amount of X radiation, what limits its reference to complex cases. With the advent of multislice CT (MSCT), it s possible to acquire exams in minimal time, with isometric voxel images that allow high quality multiplanar reconstructions. However, the effect of low-dose protocols on MSCT image quality for dental implant planning is not known. Based on what was stated before, this study evaluated the effect of radiation dose on image quality of MSCT for pre-implant evaluation. With that purpose, MSCT images of a mandible were acquired, using four distinct protocols: 300, 200, 100 and 60 mA, maintaining the other exposition parameters constant. The resulting images were subjectively evaluated by 3 trained observers, which scored the images from 0 to 3 for parameters related to the visualization of critical anatomical structures and the acceptability of the images for implant planning. Additionally, 1 observer measured implant bone height and width, in the different studied protocols. The results showed that the 60 mA protocol presented a dose reduction of 80% when compared with the manufacture s protocol. The studied images presented similar results when the visualization of the mandibular foramen, the image overall quality, and, its acceptance for dental implants planning, were analyzed. The images using 100 mA had the best results for the parameters related with the determinacy of the mandibular canal cortical and the mandibular superior and inferior cortical. The height and width implant bone measurements did not present significant statistical difference when compared to the gold standard. Based on our results, it was concluded that it is possible to obtain a dose reduction of 80%, compared to the standard protocol, and still have a good quality image for implant planning
