RESUMO

The present study aims to confront the literary works of two important Brazilian writers and intellectuals of the beginning of the 20th century Lima Barreto and Oswald de Andrade. The study was based mainly on Lima Barretos following works: Recordações do Escrivão Isaías Caminha, O Diário Íntimo, Triste fim de Policarpo Quaresma, Impressões de Leitura and Os Bruzundangas; and on Oswald de Andrades Works: Memórias Sentimentais de João Miramar, Um homem sem profissão:sob as ordens de mamãe, Do pau-brasil às utopias e à antropofagia, Serafim Ponte Grande and O perfeito cozinheiro das almas deste mundo. From these texts, we could identify the structure of the literary and national projects which are peculiar to both authors. Furthermore, the study also allowed us to verify the existing relations between the two projects, as well as the relation of these ones with the process of modernization established by the Brazilian elite of that period. To reach such a result, it was evaluated the treatment given to memory and to the urban space; the authors posture face to the national and literary language. It is also important to mention the confrontation that the texts establish between the European culture and our traditions. The historical and cultural environment in which the literary works were produced was taken into great account in order to allow a better comprehension about the existing relations with the modernization process of our country.
