RESUMO

The aim of this study was to determine whether the artifacts caused by orthodontic metallic accessories interfere with the accuracy of three-dimensional (3D) Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) model superimposition. Ten dry human skulls were subjected to 3 CBCT scans: without orthodontic brackets (T1), with stainless steel brackets bonded (T2) and with orthodontic arch wires inserted into the bracket slots (T3). Individual 3D surface models were generated for the T1, T2 and T3 images, and the within-surface distances between T2-T1 and T3-T1 were computed. Superimposition error was calculated assuming CBCT image registration of T2 and T3 with respect to T1 using plain superimposition. The following measures were evaluated: Maximum, Mean and Mean Square Distance (MSD), Root MSD (RMS) and Median. The metallic accessories caused image artifacts primarily in T2 and T3 images which, however, did not compromise the 3D model superimposition. The maximum distances of artifacts image points were compared to the representative measure of orthodontic accessories (7.5mm), and Student t test showed no significant differences (p0.05) between both measures. When measures of T2-T1 and T3-T1 were compared, the Pearson coefficients showed a high correlation regarding the central tendency measures, as follows: Mean Distance (r=0.86), MSD (r=0.87), RMS (0.97) and Median (r=0.74). The statistical findings, which were complemented by qualitative image data obtained from this study, depicted that streaking artifacts did not affect the accuracy of CBCT 3D model superimposition of dry human skulls.
