RESUMO

The Americana Hydroelectric power station (Atibaia River-Piracicaba Basin-SPBrazil) was built almost half a century ago; its main objective is to generate electric power. Such hydroelectric power station coexists with a human population in an area highly atfected by problems related to hydric resources degradation. This work has as its aim to establish the interactions between the human population living in Vila Bela (a neighborhood located downstream) and the Americana Hydroelectric power station. Three questions are intended to be answered: i)What changes has the dam caused to the environment? ii) In what ways has the dam atfected the human population social-economically wise? iii)Has the population s behavior interfered in any way with the dam? iv) Besides providing electric power, how can the power station be useful to the area where it is located? The methodology used included interviews based on questionnaires in order to obtain data ITomthe population living in the daro area as well as interviews with institutions related to this study. Through the analysisof such data it is possible to conclude that the interactions between the power station and the human population living near to it arise basically from the Salto Grande Reservoir, because most environmental problems faced by these people are related to it, either directly or indirectly
