RESUMO

The main objective of this paper is to investigate the adequacy of the Information Technology (IT) resources in the business area of Micro and Small Sized Companies (MSSCs) crediting the IT Management a fundamental role in mitigating the risks involved in the IT investment. A field research was accomplished, through application of questionnaires with ten managers of MSSCs in the city of Fortaleza. The questionnaires were applied during the period of March up to June of 2005. The model with 116 questions was subdivided in sections, with the goal of raising: the interviewee s profile, professional practice, strategic plan, organizational culture, incentive to innovation, problems involved with IT, solutions given to the IT problems, common practices of IT Management, IT Management, technological infrastructure, IT use in administration and IT outsourcing. The choice of the MSSCs segment was due to its importance in the economy, contributing to the job generation and income. Based on the analysis of the case study, it can be affirmed that the IT management is important for the development of MSSCs, improving the accomplishment of internal and external processes. From the information collected in the field research and its analysis, it was taken into consideration the lack of information of the following practices that are part of an IT Management process: the shortest time necessary to decisions making in IT, the relation of the invested percentage in IT when compared to the market, the expenses in IT executed along the years and the relation of the volume spent in IT to the profit of the company. It was identified the inexistence of operational risk prevention practices and the lack o knowledge of the existence of a relevant IT risk inventory, being also ignored the IT risks to which MSSCs are vulnerable, including the conformity risks. Regarding the IT administration, its responsibility was attributed to the high management, being part of the organizational administration. Based on the analysis of the case study, specially how the questions related to the IT risks and investments are conducted and to the practices adopted by the MSSCs managers in relation to IT resources and the knowledge about the topic, it is confirmed how incipient it is related to the existence of an IT management model.
