RESUMO

A phytosociological study of the herbaceous layer was carried out in two forest areas. One is a 42 hectares remnant of gallery forest in Brotas and the other, a 250 hectares reserve of semideciduos forest in the municipality of Campinas, both in the state of São Paulo (SP). The phytosociological method was based on 50 plots of 2x1 m, irregularly distributed in each locality. In Brotas (SP), the highest IVI species were Actinostemon communis (Muell. Arg.) Pax, Hybanthus atropurpureus Taub., Metrodorea nigra St. Hill. e Maytenus aquifolium Mart. For the Forest in Campinas (SP) the highest IVI was attributed to: Psychotria hastisepala (Muell. Arg.) Muell. Arg., Actinostemon communis (Muell. Arg.) Pax, Polygala klotschii Chod., Coffea arabica L. e Hybanthus atropurpureus Taub. A comparison of these areas was carried with out multivariated analysis program. Through quantitative data for species, and also considering their absence, it was possible to differentiate the two forests. The TWINSPAN analysis clearly separated three groups of species: one typical of the Brotas region, another of the Campinas region and a third with species common to both localities. This result could indicate different, sucession stages, or perhaps, forests with different floristic compositions - The dynamics of herbaceous layer was also investigated in the Campinas forest. For this study, 21 were examined during two years. This showed that access to water was a very important factor for the herbaceous layer, specially during seedling establishment. A recrutment rate of 14,5% and a mortality rate of 26,3% was obtained. Most of the individuals were slow growers, independent of species and the location of their plots
