RESUMO

This thesis used the Theory of Social Representations as the main theoreticalmethodological tool, because I believe that the subject gives meaning to a given object, from their natural and social relations practices. The municipality of Star of Alagoas, chosen field of study, located in the semi-arid region of the state of Alagoas, is characterized by a rainy season that lasts from 3 to 4 months and a long dry season of shortage of quality and quantity of water for all uses. The region is predominantly rural, dividing itself in 81 locations of sites and towns, and a small municipal headquarters. The research subjects are mainly small farmers, subsistence, among them, teachers, trade unionists rural, officers of health, chairman of associations and movements of farmers. This research aimed to identify the perceptions of the quantity and quality of available sources of water by households and seize the meanings and meanings associated with water, expressed in words, testimonials and stories related to customs and social practices related to water. The methodological procedures used included semi-structured interviews, in the form of informal conversations, related to the behaviour during the rainy and dry periods. The questions raised covered aspects relating to usage, consumption and attitudes in dealing with water, involving issues open for identification of constituents of common representations to the group investigated. Recorded interviews were conducted from inducing only one question: what you have to say about the water? As a result, identified is a common field of representations driven by the idea of water as a source of life, the divine phenomenon, while political object, identity and immigration. For farmers investigated, the consumption of water is mainly domestic. In general, they consider the water of the rain as of better quality, attributing the improvement of the quality of life for the construction of tanks and the implementation of programmes of the government (retirement and scholarships family). The issue of water is often seen as restricted to their physical aspects, and stressed also the characteristic of abundance or scarcity of rainfall. This work is concerned to validate the knowledge of common sense that are defined in the dynamics of relationships between people who interact in situations of scarcity of water
