RESUMO

The fast expansion of the maxilla is a treatment quite used in Orthodontics, for the correction of transversal discrepancies and it provides a better adaptation of the tongue due to the bone increase of the palatal arch, as well as a better nasal breathing. However, the vertical dental skeletal alterations produced by this therapeutic method are questioned. So, this prospective study had, as main purpose, to evaluate and compare the vertical dental skeletal alterations in patients with maxillary constriction and anterior open bite, produced by two kinds of palatal appliances: banded and bonded. Forty-eight lateral radiographs were evaluated in 24 patients. Twelve patients with initial average age of 8,8 years old (SD = 1,9) were treated with the bonded expander (group 1) and twelve patients, with average age of 8,7 years old (SD = 1,35) were treated with the banded expander (group 2). The mean time for the activation of the appliances was 14 days, executing 2/4 of activation per day. The cephalometric radiographs were evaluated in 2 different periods of the treatment: in the beginning before the installation (T1) and after six months of contention (T2). To determine the alterations statistically significant between the observation period in each group, the Wilcoxon non-parametric test was applied, and to compare the intergroup alterations, the Mann Whitney non-parametric test was applied (p≤0,05). The results showed that, in the intergroup comparison, the measures that evaluated the growth pattern, the AFAI and the vertical position of the upper molars did not present significant alterations. The maxilla moved inferiorly significantly in both groups, except in the posterior region for the group with the bonded appliance. The upper incisors and the lower molars extruded significantly in both groups. The lower incisors presented extrusion only in the group with the bonded appliance, and the interincisors vertical overjet decreased significantly in both groups. In the intergroup comparison, there was no difference statistically significant in any of the measures evaluated. One can conclude that both appliances cause similar alterations on the vertical dimension
