RESUMO

Introduction: Caries and overweight in adolescents are problems with major impact on health of the population. The overweight has been linked to the increase in consumption of refined carbohydrates, especially sugar, which are related to the prevalence of caries. The strategy of prevention and control of these diseases is the identification of common risk factors. Objective: A review of the literature on factors that determine the caries and its relationship with overweight in adolescents was done. It presents the results of a research on the frequency of caries, overweight and the association between the nutritional status with caries in a group of school teenagers in the city of Recife. Method: For the literature review, we investigated the determining factors for caries and its association with overweight in adolescents, found in research works in databases Lilacs, Scielo and Medline. Some descriptors used are: Dental caries, adolescents, overweight, risk factors and oral health. For the original article, a cross analytical study was carried out to verify the association of the following explanatory variables: assessment anthropometric, socioeconomic conditions, conditions of work and maternal education, food consumption, habits and oral hygiene and dental assistance. Results: The studies demonstrated the importance of association between the caries and nutritional status, and socioeconomic determinants, highlighting between them the number of television sets, and dental care. There was an association of the presence of tooth decay with increasing age of the students, and that the severity of dental caries has been linked to overweight, mothers with paid work, the visit to the dentist at intervals greater than a year and the number of brushing. The frequency of cariogenic food consumption was also observed Conclusions: There is a need for population and longitudinal studies to investigate the relationship between obesity and dental caries, which identify common risk factors, so that effective strategies for health promotion and prevention can be adopted
