RESUMO

The aims of this study were to evaluate the efficacy of doxycycline alone and of the combination of imidocarb dipropionate with doxycycline in the treatment of dogs naturally infected with E. canis; to analyse if there are advantages in using the association of imidocarb dipropionate and doxycycline in the treatment of E. canis infection; to reassure the need of treatment in assymptomatic infected dogs and also to observe the clinical and hematological recovery of the animals during both treatment protocols. Fifteen dogs suspected of E. canis infection were diagnosed through direct visualization of morulae in blood smear cells. They were divided in three groups: (C) without treatment; (D) treated with doxycycline 10 mg/kg orally once a day for 28 days and (I), with doxycycline associated with imidocarb dipropionate, in two subcutaneously injections of 5 mg/kg 14 days apart. The animals were submitted to physical and hematologic exams weekly. Nested PCR to detect E. canis were performed before and after treatment. We could assume that both treatments were effective and lead to the resolution of clinical signs in a few days and also promoted the hematological recovery in 70% of the dogs. There were no differences between treatments. The elimination of E. canis could be suggested by whole blood nested PCR in 70% of the treated dogs.
